ELCE 2013 Technical Showcase - Call for demonstrations

Like in the past years, the ELCE staff is organizing a technical showcase for conference participants: See http://elinux.org/ELCE_2013_Technical_Showcase The technical showcase is an opportunity: * For Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects to show their software in action, to grow their user and developer community * For system developers to share their experience using FOSS components (knowledge sharing with other system developers will need to be the primary focus) * For hardware makers to show the capabilities of their hardware, provided what is demonstrated is mostly based on FOSS. * For ELCE 2013 speakers to give a hands-on experience related to what they presented, and have plenty of time to interact with people who were interested in their presentation. The technical showcase is set to happen on Thursday evening (October 24), from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. If you are interested in showcasing something, please contact Michael Opdenacker by Oct. 13, and prepare a poster too. However, the sooner, the better, as demonstration space will be limited. 2013 Open Project Proposals - now open

Hello all,
The CE Workgroup is now accepting proposals for projects to fund this year as part of our "Open Project Proposal" period. Every year (almost) the CE Workgroup of the Linux Foundation funds a few project intended to improve Linux for use in embedded products. We are opening up a proposal period for the submission of ideas for projects for this year as well. We are getting a bit of a late start this year, so projects that are funded this year will likely be worked on starting at the end of this year and into the 2014 year beyond. The deadline for submission of projects proposals is October 2, 2013. Details about how to format your proposal, what information to include, and where to send the proposal is available on the proposal wiki page at: http://elinux.org/CEWG_Open_Project_Proposal_2013 Please follow instructions carefully to make it as easy as possible to process your proposal. Anyone may submit a proposal - you do not need to be a member of the CE Workgroup or the Linux Foundation to do so. We are now preparing for Embedded Linux Conference Europe, and as part of this event we will be presenting the results of a survey (as part of a game). Flash File system Tuning Guide - available now

I am happy to announce the availability of a document describing methods
of tuning Linux filesystems for eMMC/SDD-based block devices. This is the culmination of several months of effort, to determine the results of using different tuning options in the Linux kernel, with different filesystems running on flash-based block devices. The document was prepared by Cogent Embedded, and funded by the CE Workgroup of the Linux Foundation. In addition to describing different tuning options available, the document also gives methodologies for measuring performance on the filesystems and has extensive graphs showing the results of the different tuning options. New white paper on Android and embedded Linux

I don't often do this, but I just read a white paper by Benjamin Zores
on the relationship between Android and traditional embedded Linux, that I thought was quite good. It's a bit of a subtle advertisement for the Linux Foundation's training courses, but whether you're interested in that or not, the paper makes some good points, and I think does a good job of capturing the current pros and cons of using Android vs. traditional embedded Linux in your product designs. In the last Japan Jamboree, many attendees pointed out the inconvenience of non accessibility of the old CE Linux Forum wiki which had been troubled due to some technical reason. Now it is resolved. I believe we do not have any plan to close the old wiki site, though if you find any precious articles or materials in the old wiki, I suggest you to archive by yourself. If you can volunteer to transfer the contents from old CELF wiki to eLinux Wiki, we would be very much appreciated. LZ4 is a very fast lossless compression algorithm and it also features an extremely fast decoder [1]. But we have five of decompressors already and one question which does arise, however, is that of where do we stop adding new ones? This issue had been discussed and came to the conclusion [2]. Russell King said that we should have: - one decompressor which is the fastest - one decompressor for the highest compression ratio - one popular decompressor (eg conventional gzip) If we have a replacement one for one of these, then it should do exactly that: replace it. The benchmark shows that an 8% increase in image size vs a 66% increase in decompression speed compared to LZO(which has been known as the fastest decompressor in the Kernel). Therefore the "fast but may not be small" compression title has clearly been taken by LZ4 [3].
