ELC 2014 videos
Michael Opdenacker
Greetings,
Here are at least videos for a limited set of talks, recorded with limited hardware resources, as the Linux Foundation turned out to only be able to make audio recordings that time: http://free-electrons.com/blog/elc2014-videos/ <https://www.linkedin.com/redirect?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffree-electrons%2Ecom%2Fblog%2Felc2014-videos%2F&urlhash=AKSD&_t=tracking_anet> We also include links to the audio recordings and to the talk abstracts. Linux kernel developer contribution obstacles survey
Bird, Tim <Tim.Bird@...>
Hello everyone,
I am conducting research for the CE Workgroup of the Linux Foundation regarding the reasons that Linux kernel developers do NOT submit their changes upstream. The intended participants for this survey are developers who have modified the Linux kernel, but who, for one reason or another, have not submitted their change(s) to the mainline or upstream kernel tree. This research is part of an effort to more officially quantify the obstacles (or perception of obstacles), that developers have with regard to contributing to the Linux kernel. It is hoped that this information will help inform continuing efforts to help remove those obstacles, and lower the barriers to participating in the Linux kernel development community. The survey should take about 10 to 15 minutes. I would be very pleased if everyone who receives this e-mail can take the survey. I hope to present the results at a talk I am giving at the upcoming Embedded Linux Conference Europe. I know that the reach of this e-mail is limited to those subscribed to this e-mail list. Please forward this to other kernel developers in your organization, and encourage them to take the survey as well. Here is the URL for the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2VHVHBN The following command may be helpful for finding e-mail addresses of kernel developers in your organization: (do this on internal trees, to find the e-mails for developers who may not have commits in mainline!) Replace <company.com> with a search expression that will match e-mail addresses for your organization. $ git log --author=<company.com> --format="%ae" | sort | uniq Please take the survey by October 6. Thanks! -- Tim Bird Architecture Group Chair, CE Linux Forum Senior Software Engineer, Sony Mobile

ELC 2014 Technical Showcase - Call for demonstrations
Michael Opdenacker
Greeting, person interested in the Embedded Linux Conference...
Like in the past years, the ELC staff is organizing a technical showcase for conference participants: http://elinux.org/ELC_2014_Technical_Showcase The technical showcase is an opportunity: * For Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects to show their software in action, to grow their user and developer community * For system developers to share their experience using FOSS components (knowledge sharing with other system developers will need to be the primary focus) * For hardware makers to show the capabilities of their hardware, provided what is demonstrated is mostly based on FOSS. * For ELC 2014 speakers to give a hands-on experience related to what they presented, and have plenty of time to interact with people who were interested in their presentation. * For people interested in the ELC 2015 showcase to see what kind of demo they could make next time ;) The technical showcase is set to happen on Tuesday evening (April 29), at 6:15 pm. If you are interested in showcasing something, please contact me by April 18, and prepare a poster too. However, the sooner, the better, as demonstration space will be limited. My e-mail (in spam-resistant form) is: michael (dot) opdenacker (at) free (dash) electrons (dot) com Looking forward to seeing you there! Date: Mon, 03 Feb 2014 17:49:48 +0530Hi Kiran, This is an open list. That is anyone can subscribe and contribute. The list members are therefore a collection of both private individuals and individuals who represent companies or organizations. So, I'm not exactly sure *who* you would be cooperating or affiliating with, but in any event, I hardly think that anyone here would be *against* cooperating with you. Welcome aboard. The best form of affiliation in the Open Source world (aside from commercial contracts ;-) is contribution to an Open Source project. So, my personal suggestions for cooperation are: 1. Set up a Web presence and mailing list for your group and advertise your interest in contributing to Linux and Open Source projects. Conduct monthly lectures in Kochi and put the slides from the lectures on your group web site. Set up email accounts on the domain that you select for your group. 2. Organize your local group to contribute to one of the CE Linux Forum projects. See http://elinux.org/Sitesupport-url, and http://elinux.org/Project_Proposals_for_2013. We could conduct a straw poll to find out which new features to add to Linux and members of your group could select a feature to work on as a group. 3. Organize your group to work on adding software packages to Buildroot. The advantage to this is that it is not technically difficult to add new projects to Buildroot, and members of your group can get a lot of good publicity for contributing. Ask group members to use their group email addresses for their contributions to Open Source projects. 4. Make a github account for your group and publish the Open Source contributions by members of your group on the account. It is best to try to concentrate on one particular susbsystem or package so that members of the group can help each other and can, as a group, attain a meaningful amount of work on something specific. 5. Organize "Linux days" and distribute Live CD distributions with your group logo to get new people interested in Linux. Your company can contribute at very low cost by hosting the local events and paying for the group web site. You need to find students who are interested and you need to be able to offer employment to the best and brightest when they complete their studies. Your company can probably gain some good will value by advertising its sponsorship of the local Linux developers group. Kiran G <kiran@...>
Hi, I am Kiran G and I am an embedded linux developer working in Kochi,India. I tried sending this mail to office@..., but it failed. My company is very interested in starting a local community for Linux developers. We are willing to conduct events for promoting the use of linux for development. We are planning to collaborate with local collages to encourage the use of linux as part of the carriculam and to get the students interested in embedded linux. Is it possible to collaborate with you? If yes, do we have to join "Linux Foundation"? Can we join as a company as opposed to a single member? If collaboration is not possible with you, can you please guide me in the right direction? Which do you suggest is a good international community to which we can "affiliate" Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and regards, Kiran G
