Hotel recommendation / Near from Japan Linux Symposium Venue

Satoru Ueda <Satoru.Ueda@...>

Dear All,

As all of you may know, next month, Kernel Summit
coupled with Japan Linux Symposium will be held in
Tokyo, Akihabara. Just like the passed case in
Ottawa Linux Symposium, on the Thursday night,
(October 22nd), CE Linux Forum is planning to have
a private BoF style meeting at Ochanomizu Hotel
Juraku where is located within 10 minutes walk
from the main venue of Kernel Summit and Japan Linux
Symposium. The access from both Narita Airport and
Haneda Airport is fine:

From Narita:
- Take JR Line for Tokyo (Narita Express)
and...
- transfer to Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku
line north bound to Akihabara Station
or
- transfer to Cyuo line to Ochanomizu
station
both are just few minutes ride.

If it is commuter time (7am to 10am /
5pm to 8pm) I highly recommend you to
take taxi from Tokyo station which may
cost around 1000 Yen.

- Take Keisei Line for Keisei-Ueno (Skyliner)
and...
- Transfer at Nippori station to south
bound of Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku line to Akihabara station. It is just
few minutes ride.
or
- Take taxi at Keisei-Ueno Station, the
final stop. It may cost about 1000 Yen.

From Haneda:
- Take monorail to Hamamatsucyo station and
transfer to Yamanote or Keihintohoku line
north bound to Akihabara Station. It is
about 10 minutes ride.

The service of Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Cyuo
and the monorail lines are so frequent that you
do not need to worry for.

Since the hotel is designed mainly for business
trip of Japanese people, those rooms would not be wide
enough but it must be so convenient location for
whom attending the events.

The hotel is offering us of our special opportunity
to stay with our rate. If you are interested in
this offer, please look into the attached pdf file
and send the filled form to the hotel as instructed
in the file.

If you have any difficulties communicating with the
hotel, please do not hesitate contacting me.

As to the detail of "Thursday night Bof", the detail
will be informed later.

I hope above helpful for you.

Japan Linux Symposium / Hotel to stay

Satoru Ueda <Satoru.Ueda@...>

Dear All,

Please be informed that the Hotel Jyuraku Ocyanomizu are
happy to block the rooms for us (CE Linux Forum members and
embedded system developers) for the stay in Tokyo to attend
Japan Linux Symposium. If you wish to stay this hotel, please
indicate me by August 21st.

It is *NOT for booking* but just to know how many rooms
should be blocked. I sincerely looking forward to your
cooperations.

[Advantage of the Hotel Jyuraku Ocyanomizu]==============

- Short walking distance (less than 10 minutes) from
the main venue of Japan Linux Symposium
- You will see the old Tokyo scene around the hotel area
because the surrounding area is rare place where not
damaged in world war II.
- Inexpensive cost to stay

Single bed room: 8,000 Yen / night
Double bed room: 10,600 Yen / night
Twin bed room: 12,600 Yen / night

(Above prices are not including breakfast. The breakfast
will be provided at 1,100 Yen)

- Convenient access from both Narita airport, Haneda
airport and Tokyo station.

Web site in English:
http://www.juraku.com/ocha/english1/index.html

=========================================================

Please be noted that the hotel is designed for business trip
of Japanese people and the rooms are relatively small. I
recommend American and European people to take "Double" or
"Twin" room.

The booking instructions will be provided in early September
if I get sufficient number of people indicating to stay there.

===< REPLY FORM >========================================

I wish to stay this hotel (Hotel Jyuraku Ocyanomizu):
[ ] Single Room
[ ] Double Room
[ ] Twin Room

Name:

=========================================================

The Linux Foundation is also offering lodging ideas which
are attractive:

http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/japan-linux-symposium/travel

But those hotels are required some train ride to the venue.
The nearest ones are:

- Villa Fontaine Jinbou-chou
- Villa Fontaine Kudanshita

Best regards,
S. Ueda

[Fwd: New MMC maintainer needed]

Tim Bird <tim.bird@...>

FYI:

I saw this on linux-embedded last week.

If someone is interested, here's an opening to help maintain the MMC
layer in the kernel. Contact Pierre directly if you are interested.

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: New MMC maintainer needed
Date: Tue, 14 Jul 2009 15:36:01 +0200
From: Pierre Ossman <pierre@...>
To: LKML <linux-kernel@...>, linux-embedded@..., <others...>

I'm afraid the time has come for me to step down as maintainer for the
MMC/SD/SDIO subsystem and for someone else to take over the rudder. It
is no secret that I haven't been able to give the maintainer role the
resources it required, and as a result it has gone from being a fun
hobby to a burdensome chore. I was hoping it was a temporary slump, but
this has been the norm for over a year now, so it's time for me to
throw in the towel.

I don't have any clear nominees for a replacement, but if you feel that
you are in a position to take over the maintainer role then please
raise your hand.

I only have a few patches in my queue right now and I can push those
off to Linus before I quit. There are however a lot of unhandled
messages that need attention. I can provide a list once a successor has
been named.

I realise that you have put a lot of time and effort into the patches
you send me and I am truly sorry that I haven't been able to handle
them better. Hopefully me stepping down means that we get someone who
can actually take care of everything in a timely manner.

I haven't decided what to do with the sdhci maintainership yet. Right
now I only know I need a break and freeing myself from the MMC
maintainer role is the first step. Hopefully I can return as a
developer in the future.

[Reminder] Re: [Members] [Announce] Japan Technical Jamboree

Satoru Ueda <Satoru.Ueda@...>

Dear All,

Next Friday, July 17th is the date for Japan Technical Jamboree
#29. I hope you to be reminded.

http://elinux.org/Japan_Technical_Jamboree_29

In the session by Mr. Kosaki, we would like to have a discussion
opportunity about CGroup and the tracing issue.

1. CGroup:
----------
The core developer eager to listen to the demand of those functions
from embedded system view point.

2. Tracing:
-----------
(A message from Kosaki san)
Currently the merger of perf_counter and ftrace is under going
aiming at easier measurement of function duration and richer
measurement results to be obtained.

However, because of less persons who can talk about the use case
of those tracing mechanism in LKML, many of community people are
anxious for them to become "features which no one uses". This
issue will be talked in the Kernel Summit of this year.

In the arena of embedded systems, there must be existing much
experiences latent. Thus community is looking forward embedded
system people to join the discussions within LKML and talk about
the requirements for tracers.

It *is* important not to be reverted those features.

# Sorry for bad translation quality... ;-)

Despite of Japan Jamboree, I wish you to provide of your
comment as to above.

At the same time, I will be able to summarize the interesting
sessions which are accepted for Japan Linux Symposium from
embedded system view point.

One thing more... We are still soliciting for the session
proposals for next week!

Best,
S. Ueda

1. CGroup:
----------

2. Tracing:
-----------

Linux Symposium coming soon

Tim Bird <tim.bird@...>

I know that travel budgets are tight, but I thought I would send out
a reminder that Linux Symposium is coming soon - July 13-17 in Montreal
Canada. Note that July 13 and 14 will have numerous tutorials and some
mini-summits, with presentations, tutorial and BOFs scheduled for
July 15-17.

The CE Linux Forum is a sponsor of this event again this year, and
several forum member companies have sessions of interest to
embedded developers.

I will be speaking there about duration tracing with ftrace (something
I've been working on lately), as well as leading my annual "state
of embedded Linux" BOF.

Check out the schedule at http://www.linuxsymposium.org/2009/schedule.php,
and see if there are some sessions you'd like to attend.

Regards,
-- Tim

soliciting for the session proposals.

http://elinux.org/Japan_Technical_Jamboree_29

At last Jamboree in Osaka:

http://elinux.org/Japan_Technical_Jamboree_28

we had tried "remote presentation" using Skype which
worked very fine. If you wold like to perform your
presentation even from out of Japan, please let me
know.

It is a very ideal timing to start collaboration
for Japan Linux Symposium (in Akihabara) scheduled in
this October. If you are challenging to perform any
presentation in Akihabara, please introduce the
outline!

Best regards,
S. Ueda

http://elinux.org/Japan_Technical_Jamboree_29

Youtube

White paper on fastboot technique on Blackfin processor

Tim Bird <tim.bird@...>

FYI:

For those interested in fast boot times, I recently saw this go by on the
linux-embedded mailing list (by Robin Getz). I read through it and
the information is quite good.

I put a link to this under "case studies" on the elinux wiki
boot time page:
http://elinux.org/Boot_Time#Case_Studies

-- Tim

For a sub 1 second (973ms) boot (to userspace - end of the /etc/rc file), have
a look at:

https://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=fast_boot_example

It also includes a 421ms for a minimal kernel.

No magic - just careful optimisation of the BootROM, U-Boot, and the kernel.

Some of the tricks we do are architecture independent, and should be able to
be applied to any system. Your milage may vary - depending on your
distribution, and your architecture.
